Melanoma

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States and more than one million skin cancers are diagnosed annually. In fact, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer, and more than 20 die every day. Melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer and is responsible for 80% of skin cancer deaths. One person dies every hour from Melanoma in the United States. If found early, Melanoma is completely curable and patients should watch for the ABCDE's of Melanoma.

A is for Assymetry - Watch out for moles or spots that are assymetric.

B is for Border - The borders of melanomas tend to be uneven, with scalloped or notched edges.

C is for Color - Melanomas are often multicolored, in shades of brown or black, or even red, white or blue.

D is for Diameter - Melanomas are typically bigger than a pencil eraser in diameter (1/4" or 6mm).

E is for Evolving - Common moles look the same over time. Keep an eye out for moles that evolve or change in any way.

Basal Cell Carcinoma & Squamous Cell Carcinoma

There are two other main forms of skin cancer : Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer, and is usually painless and slow growing. It has a high rate of cure and typically does not spread to other areas of the skin.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma begins as a small sandpaper-like growth called Actinic Keratosis (AKs), and around 300,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the US. Most of these cases occur in fair skinned people. Squamous Cells have a 90% cure rate when found early, but if left untreated it can spread to your vital organs or cause structural damage to the surrounding tissue.

Everyone should have a yearly dermatology skin examination to detect skin cancer and pre-cancerous conditions. Click here for an appointment with Dr. Rosen or call 941-794-DERM(3376) or Toll-free at 1-877-816-DERM(3376).

Acne Treatments for ADULTS

Acne

Although acne is most common during teenage years, a number of patients in their 20’s – 40’s suffer from acne that either persists from their teens or that actually begins after the age of 20. Whatever the age, the first step in the formation of an acne lesion is a clogged “pore” (hair follicle), and we can use a number of prescription medications for treatment. If bacteria and inflammation also become involved as the acne lesion evolves, either oral or topical antibiotics are used to treat this. For a woman with late-appearing or particularly treatment-resistant acne, it is often important to check her hormonal status and make sure that her androgen (male hormone) levels are not increased. Overall, there is an arsenal of prescription treatments available.

NEW Blu-U Light Therapy for Pre-Cancerous Actinic Keratosis (AKs)

The Blu-U Treatment is a convenient and effective way to treat pre-cancerous Actinic Keratosis, also known as AKs.

AKs are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin that are caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) such as sunlight. More than 10 million Americans have AKs and they are the first step in the development of skin cancers. Some AKs have the potential to progress to Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). Since there is no way to know ahead of time which AKs could develop into SCC, it is important to see Dr. Rosen for a yearly skin exam.

To begin the treatment, the Levulan Kerastick Topical Solution is applied to the area with AKs. The solution is then absorbed by the AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to light. When the AK cells are exposed to the Blu-U light, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells and their potential to form into skin cancer.

Blu-U Treatment is less invasive than previous options, therefore offering patients less down time and less discomfort. Blu-U Treatments are also usually covered by insurance.

Nails

Nails

Dermatology involves treatment of disorders of the skin, hair, and nails. Nail problems make up about 10 percent of all dermatological conditions. Fungal infections cause about half of all nail disorders and are most commonly seen in the toenails. Even though rare, melanomas can actually arise from underneath the nail, and can appear as a dark line going from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Any changes in nails should be evaluated by a Board Certified Dermatologist. Dr. Gary Rosen at Dermatology at The Eye Associates has long experience and much success in treating these vexing problems.

Sculptra® Aesthetic

Sculptra Aesthetic is a new FDA approved facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid, which helps to replace lost collagen. It helps correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles, and folds, that appear with aging by stimulating your body's own natural collagen growth.

Sculptra Aesthetic is not an overnight miracle. It is the first facial injectable that provides subtle results over time. A full treatment is an average of three injection sessions over a few months, and the results can last two years or longer. That gives you more time to see how fabulous subtle can be!

Laser Skin Rejuvenation

The Eye Associates is proud to be the FIRST in Florida to offer LUMENIS UltraPulse Encore Laser with TotalFX Technology for laser skin rejuvenation.

  • Laser Skin Rejuvenation (Face, Upper and Lower Eyelids, Neck, Chest, Hands, Arms & Legs)
  • Sun Damaged Skin & Brown Spots
  • Acne Scar Treatment
  • Laser Based Rhinophyma Treatment

Millions of Americans are seeking relief from aging skin, brown spots, mottled pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin tone, lax skin, and acne scars. Today these flaws and signs of aging are able to be treated more gently with advanced lasers and without the prolonged healing times often associated with older, more traditional treatments. The Eye Associates is now offering the LUMENIS UltraPulse Encore Laser Technology to patients seeking a less invasive and effective skin rejuvenation treatment. This revolutionary new skin resurfacing treatment promises improvement in skin tone, texture, and tightening.

ActiveFX + DeepFX = TotalFX

The ActiveFX procedure is a low-density fractional resurfacing procedure ideal for fine lines, uneven pigment, and light skin tightening. It is for those who want an improvement in the skin's tone and texture without a lot of downtime. DeepFX, as its name implies, goes deeper into the skin layers and has a more dramatic effect on skin remodeling. TotalFX combines the strengths of ActiveFX and DeepFX technology to customize treatment, still typically with a healing time of only 7 days. Also, it has the added value of stimulating your skin to continue to improve over a few months following the treatment. This occurs because of a natural process, called collagenesis, which continues to plump the skin, provide better elasticity, and result in a healthy, younger looking skin as time goes on. Most people actually look better 3-5 months after the procedure as the collagen continues to remodel.

Nearly as important as the areas treated by this laser are the areas left untouched. With the Lumenis Bridge Therapy System of using a low-density pattern of laser pulses, small bridges of untouched skin are left behind to aid in the regeneration process. These bridges speed healing and recovery and blend into a wonderful, uniform and satisfying result.

Patients love that each treatment is customized according to the nature and extent of their sun damage, skin type and individual requirements for recovery time. And the entire procedure does not have to be done all at one time. Patients can chose how many areas to treat according to their desire, need, and even budget.

Affordable laser pricing starts as low as $600, up to $1900 for a full rejuvenation treatment package which includes the hands, face, neck and chest.

Call 941-794-DERM(3376) or Toll-free at 1-877-816-DERM(3376) to schedule a FREE Cosmetic Screening for one of our laser procedures. Also, ask about our "0" interest financing.
