What Are Cataracts?

Your eyes contain a natural lens that lies just behind the pupil. This lens bends and focuses light to focus on the retina, which allows your brain to clearly process your surroundings as images. A cataract is the clouding or yellowing of your eye’s natural lens, making it difficult for light to pass through the eye and focus properly. The result is a gradual loss of the crisp, clear vision you once knew.

Cataracts typically begin to develop around age 60, with minimal impact to vision at first but worsening over time, and eventually can be completely vision impairing. Some common symptoms of cataracts include:

Advanced Cataract Surgery

Cataracts do not heal on their own and unfortunately will continue to worsen with time. The only cure for cataracts is their removal by an experienced ophthalmologist. The good news is - cataract removal surgery is incredibly common, effective, and safe. The first step in cataract surgery is the removal of the clouded natural lens. Then, the lens is replaced by a new, clear artificial replacement, known as an intraocular lens, or IOL.

There are many types of IOLs to choose from, including basic lenses meant for seeing far away. But there are more advanced lenses, like multifocal or toric lenses that will allow you to have clear vision near, far, and in between. The team at The Eye Associates will work with you to determine the best replacement lens for you and your lifestyle.

What are the different types of cataract surgery?

Laser Cataract Surgery

The Eye Associates are pleased to offer laser cataract surgery with Alcon's LenSx® laser. This laser revolutionizes cataract surgery with unparalleled precision and customization. This cutting-edge technology integrates computer control into crucial steps of the procedure, offering cataract patients the most advanced surgical option available.

No-Stitch Cataract Surgery

No-stitch cataract surgery offers quick recovery with reduced discomfort and improved vision without the need for stitches. By creating a small incision on the edge of the cornea, our cataract surgeons can remove the cataract and place the IOL without the need for stitches. The area will heal and seal naturally, reducing discomfort and irritation sometimes caused by stitches.

Topical, No-Needle Cataract Surgery

With topical anesthetics, you can now have cataract surgery without going under anesthesia. This method eliminates discomfort and anxiety associated with needles.

Simulate Your Vision After Cataract Surgery

Over the past six decades, the only choice for a cataract surgery implant was the standard ‘monofocal’ IOLs. They offer good functional ‘distance’ vision, but reading glasses are almost always needed for near vision.

If you want to be less dependent on eyeglasses or contact lenses, or if you have astigmatism, then the FDA approved Premium Intraocular Lens (IOLs) are a better choice. Because of the advanced technology utilized in these Premium IOLs, your vision may be better than it would be if the standard IOL was used.
