Blu-U Light Photodynamic Therapy for Pre-Cancerous Actinic Keratosis (AKs)

Actinic Keratosis, or AKs, are the most common form of pre-cancerous skin cancer. Click here to schedule an appointment with Dr. Stevenson or call toll-free 1-877-816-DERM (3376).

A popular treatment for AKs is with Blu-U photodynamic therapy treatment. To begin the treatment, the Levulan Kerastick Topical Solution is applied to the areas with AKs. The solution is then absorbed by the AK cells where it is converted to a chemical that makes the cells extremely sensitive to intense light. When the AK cells are exposed to the Blu-U light, a reaction occurs which destroys the AK cells and their potential to form into skin cancer.

This treatment is less invasive than previous options, therefore typically offering patients less down time and less discomfort. These treatments  for AKs are also usually covered by insurance.

Ongoing skin examinations are the key to early detection and prevention. Since there is no way to know ahead of time who will develop skin cancer, it is important to have a yearly skin exam. Blu-U Light Photodynamic Therapy for Acne

Most often acne is treated with over-the-counter and prescription products, but another innovative way to help control acne is with Blu-U Light Treatment. One of the key players in the formation of acne is the growth of bacteria. The unique intensive blue light helps kill the bacteria on the skin that is contributing to the acne. Treatment is usually given once a week for five weeks. Insurance rarely pays this photodynamic therapy treatment.
