Dr. Daniel Kiernan is seeing patients in our Bradenton, Sarasota, and Venice Offices. Dr. Daniel Kiernan specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the retina, vitreous, and macula and is very experienced in the treatment of macular degeneration, retinal detachments, retinal tears and holes, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, vein occlusions, macular pucker/macular hole, and many other retinal conditions. He has a particular interest in diagnosing and treating inherited retinal diseases including retinitis pigmentosa and offers free genetic testing for patients and their family members at his offices.

Dr. Kiernan graduated from The University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He received his doctorate in medicine from Chicago Medical School/Rosalind Franklin University, and completed his residency in ophthalmology at The University of Chicago Hospital, Pritzker School of Medicine. During his vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, Dr. Kiernan was awarded several accolades for his research in imaging and treatment of retinal diseases, including the Raymond R. Margherio Award from the Retina Society, which he was subsequently elected to by his peers. He continues his interest in investigating both noninvasive and surgical approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of sight-debilitating retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and inherited retinal diseases, including novel genetic testing techniques and treatment options.

Dr. Kiernan is a member of the American Society of Retinal Surgeons, the Retina Society, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the National Eagle Scout Association. He is a reviewer for and has dozens of publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmology journals, textbooks, and continuing medical education activities for optometrists, ophthalmologists, and students.

Of note, Dr. Kiernan is the oldest sibling in an adopting, transracial family, and his father and sister are also ophthalmologists. Dr. Kiernan enjoys leisure time with his wife, family, and six pets (3 dogs and 3 cats) as well as outdoor and indoor exercise.
